With dvd rentals steadily on the decline, Blockbuster tried to save themselves by selling hardware and seriously pushing the impulse items on the way to the register. The idea was to make Blockbuster a destination for all your movie viewing needs, from the hardware to the rentals to the snacks. 
The two zones had very different purposes and therefore different designs. The hardware display needed to feel like it was cutting edge tech from the future, and the snacks needed to feel more friendly and inviting. Both still held to Blockbuster's brand look and feel though.
